Injection pump timing conversion to mm

Postby GLHS » Sun Aug 12, 2007 9:03 pm

Going to check timing on my pump and was wondering what/if there is a conversion for mm to degrees. I think early first gens are set to 1.40 mm and intercooled cooled trucks are 1.25 mm. Was going to set mine for 1.75 mm.
I know I could just listen to the engine but I'm curious where I have it set now and how much difference a few mms make.

One of my cummins manuals says that 1.4mm is the same as 14 degrees or 1.7mm is the same as 17 degrees. The shop I use for some stuff set mine up so they can use a light and set it as degrees. Had to make a pointer if I remember right. (that is happening less and less frequently) :roll: :( :)

I guess I worded the topic incorrectly. What I meant to ask was what is the conversion for mm to crankshaft degrees?
Thanks paccool for the respose. What manual is that in, may I ask?
Who sells an affordable optical timing light for diesels?
Another question is how many psi of fuel pressure does take to increase the timing 1*?

It is not completely linear, as the cam plate is not straight in its entire travel. I imagine it would be linear for a while, but you'd get to a point where x mm doesnt necessarily equal the same degree turn it did 3 degrees ago.

I got this off Cummins QuickServe FWIW.

One mm (.039 inch) of rotation past the timing mark will advance or retard (depending on the direction of rotation) the pump by one degree.

I checked the timing this weekend.
I have a B&C series timing tool from the Mackenzie tool company that finds top dead center by pushing down on the intake valve. Some observations;
1. My timing pin is correct. I can engage the pin +/- .06 mm from TDC.
2. My timing was set at 2.25 mm. I guess this explains why it would pull so easily to 4000 rpm. :lol: I loosened up the injection lines and determined the most I could advance the pump was 2.38 mm. Going the other way I could turn it down to .75 mm. I set my pump to 1.75 mm. Noticed boost went up by about 1 or 2 psi. Egts climb faster after a certain rpm. Didn't check to see what rpm as I was running out of road.
3. Turned the key on to see if if 17psi of fuel would make the tool read different. It did not.
4. I may turn it down some more to 1.65 mm as this is where I had it when I ran my best times.
