I don't get it...

I'd think Yellow Pages under "machine shop" should get you close, no?

The shops I've checked at are usually between 200 and 400 dollars for orings. Plus studs by themselves are about 4 or 500.

Can you do o-rings yourself or does the head have to be machined for them? Seems like I should know this as long as Ive been hitting these sites but...

No you can't O-ring your self unless you have a nice little machine shop in your back yard :) and also have to have the head milled flat (this according to rip at sourceauto) and he quoted me 350 for o-rings yesterday. and 435 for ARP studs
hope this helps

How often does the head need to be milled flat?

Here's a newbie question that I should now; what's the difference between O-rings and fire rings?

well I would say that anytime you O/H the head you should mill it, for better sealing and if you overheat the engine you might want to look at doing it.. and i have the same question as far as the "o-ring" vs "fire ring"
so if i find that out before someone else awnsers, I'll post it.

Basicly, o-rings are grooves cut in the head, a piece of wire is inserted in the groove, and it crimps the head gasket tighter.
Firerings are grooves cut in the block, bigger groove, bigger wire. You need a special head gasket for these.
At least that's the way I under stand it.

By the way, a Head Shop is where you go to get rolling papers, bongs, and other druggie paraphenalia. My buddy took me to one once.
