Hard to start, loses power, dies...

Postby btp1976 » Wed Jul 27, 2011 8:38 am

I was driving the truck and it shut off like i'd cut off the fuel. Opened the hood and found a leak at the injector pump. I pulled the pump and replaced the o-ring between the pump body and the bulkhead where the fuel lines come out.

The leak is fixed, but the truck is hard to start and will run ok for a mile or so then lose power and die. I don't know if the hard to start and losing power problems are related.

I turned the motor to get the pump key at 12 o'clock, then tightened the jam bolt to keep the pump from turning, pulled and reinstalled the pump with out turning the engine. I tightened the pump down with just hand pressure holding it advanced. I'm wondering if the timing is off causing the hard start problem.

I'm gonna put a fuel filter on it to see if that makes any difference in the way it runs. The filter is only a month old now, but could be bad. The lift pump was replaced just before I did the conversion and has 3000 or so miles on it.

Ideas?

Added some fuel and a new fuel filter, but couldn't get it to start.

The lift pump was new right before I did the conversion. It's less than six months old. It could still be bad, but it would surprise me.
