Gottta noise

Postby thumpertrev » Sat Oct 29, 2011 1:42 pm

Not sure where to post this question as I dont know whats at fault. Mods move this if ya have to. Anyway...Under part throttle acceleration I have a noise coming from what sounds like the lower end. Its rhythm is matched by the speed of the engine. I can only reproduce this noise while I'm driving. If I put the same load on the motor with the brakes on at 0 mph in gear...no sound. Rev the motor in park... no sound. Rechecked my valves and all are properly adjusted. I put a hose to ear on each valve cover and they all sound the same. Im hoping its the flexplate as Im going to order one in about 10min. anyway. What are your thoughts Cummins guru's?

What does the noise sound like?

Clanging, knocking, tapping...?

would say a valve, but since it doesnt do it when idling you might be on the right track

Check for something loose, like the exhaust on the tranny, or maybe a motor mount, my exhaust would do that to me, drove me nuts till I got under there and noticed it touching. But like yours, I couldnt reproduce the noise, only while driving would it do that

Well, started hearing it idling in park so I climbed under it with a tube to ear. Loudest at the flexplate. New one on the way. Will let you know what happens.

Well I guess I'll chalk this up to a lesson learned. Here's my friday night schooling.

#1. Ebay SFI flex-plates ARE too good to be true.

#2 Apparently the previous owner of this engine had already advanced a tooth on the pump.

#3 You can hear what sounds to be a cracked flex-plate when the timing is too far advanced. Retarded my timing and the truck runs better, smokes less, and NO MORE KNOCK!!!!
