my head porting adventures

Postby ahale2772 » Thu Nov 03, 2011 5:13 am

so ive finally started puttin in time on porting my spare head.

im gona keep posting pictures to see if anyone has any advice on what to watch out for, what to port, and what swirl charicteristics to leave.

ive started on the intake runners, allready matched my maifold flange to the ports, and ive got a gasket that I will match later.

im gona start by making the intake runners a little more round to compensate for the round runners I'm using on my intake. I figure if i optimise how the intake flows I can gain some CFM over a stock log... is that wrong? should I leave the runners alone?

anyways ive started smoothing out the port walls and removing some obstructions. ive smoothed out the area around the pushrod holes untill its only about 1/8 thick... kinda alot but it eliminates a bump here... (#1)
Image
the area labled as #2 is the next area im concerned about, its the wall before the turn into the bowl, should I just clean it up or try to remove some? im gona focus on the ceiling and that wall because it is the main path the air takes before entering the bowl to swirl

next... im wondering what kind of material i should remove below the valve seats, there is alot there and I dont know how much to take off the walls. there is about 1/8 of an inch of material that seems to be supporting the seats, and in pictures such as this....Image the area is almost completly removed (i dont want to have the seats pound into the head

any advice is good

nope still porting and fiddling, cant put in too much time so its pretty much one hour a night.

but yes a properly ported head will give you better power and spool up, fact

Are you going to swap this head on when you do the cam?

DO NOT gasket match the exhaust side of your head!!!!! Very very bad things will happen if you do! TRUST ME!!! The echaust manifold and turbo will be laying on the frame rail with little bits of the head still atached!

If you use the exhaust manifold gasket as a template to port the exhaust side of the head you will first depending on your casting grind threw the bottom of the head into the little pockets in the bottom of the outside of the head after getting all dissapointed and deciding to weld the holes shut you will then decide to keep porting.... Why not rite? The head already has been cut threw..... Then you will make the top soo thin that when drive pressure and heat is supplied you will blow the tops of of the exhause runners off and the bolts on the bottom of the manifold will break off because of age and rust and viola the manifold is now laying on the inner fender well or frame rail depending on the manifold you are running shoot mena text i will send you some pics of my head 618 920 2827

dont forget hearing, and eye protection along with a mask for breathing. get a iron flake in your eye and it will start rusting almost immediatly and a trip to the eye doctor will happen i promiss. I ported a bunch and had fillings on my arms for a hour or so in the summer and they rusted and stained my arms in tat short of time. not I put my shop vac on the port or chanber i,am working on and it sucks 99% or the debris as I go.

That is some hurtful mess. Some years ago, I got some iron in one eye and it irritated it such that I shortly had a nosebleed.
