freeway boost

Postby TRENDZ » Wed Nov 16, 2011 7:56 pm

What boost levels and/or egts are you guys seeing at a steady 65-70 mph? I'm curious. My truck has 3.08 rear gears, a 518(od) trans with a goerand converter. At 70mph i'm at 9-10 psi and 700 degrees. I can open up my turbo (351 vgt) and drop the boost, which raises the egts. It just has me wondering what a more normal truck operates as far as boost/egts.

It's hardly normal  , but my twin truck sees about 4-6 psi on level ground at 65-70. Up to around 10psi uphill and down to 0-2 psi going downhill. No idea on EGTs.

I also have the 351ve, not on the truck atm. i saw 6-7psi cruising with my turbo not closed down really far. curious as to how your turbo is controlled. have any pics, video or anything of it?

33x12.5x16.5 tires 4x4 4.10's 5spd. DennyT stage 1, 2-30psi gauge, pump tuned by me (low smoke), stock H1C with 18cm housing.

65mph, about 2-4psi. 70 is 5psi. Level ground 1900-2100 rpms. Goes up quickly to 10psi with any sort of drag, whether wind or hills.

The EGT probe is in the downpipe but I see about 400-450*. I think that's around 600ish preturbo.

I see 12-14 cruising in 5th (75mph) with an hx35 and 3.54's, thats pushing 37's tho, and about 900* egts

65-70 is the sweetspot where my egts are down to 700ish and boost is 8-10

5psi, 700deg @ 65mph on flat ground with less than a 5mph cross wind.

0-5 boost, 7-800* egt's at 70 with 355's. Not exactly stock either. ;)

I modified the control section to accept a reversable DC motor, controlled manually by a momentary open/close switch on the dash, instead of the stepper motor that is on them originally. It works real nice.

"More normal", That's funny with this crowd.
Sense I rarely venture over 55, it's hard to say with my "not so normal" 91. But at 55 on level ground empty, I see 0psi and 450° in 5th. Hit a hill and it has gone as high as 10psi and 1000° in 5th. Drop it to 4th and egt drops to 700°.
My stock 92 has no gauges so I'm no help there.

Sounds like it would work real nice. too bad my turbo came without all the electronic bs or i might look into trying that. i need to figure out something with it though instead of just setting it in one spot, i was thinking maybe having the exhaust brake on pull cable, and the turbo opening up as boost comes in with a waste gate actuator. i need to draw up some plans and build it one of these days. i need to more now because im in the middle of putting my injectors in :D

O.k. What would be the best situation? If I can get cooler egts with more boost, would I be better off as far as fuel mileage goes? I'm wondering if the fuel pin would just stroke more and increase fuel usage. I do have a "valet" valve for the afc housing. I've never tried closing it. I guess it would be a good experiment.
My question is, is the coolest egt always the best mileage?

no, you could lug your truck around hazing unburnt fuel all day and get bad MPG's. you need to burn the fuel completly to get good mpg's.

But too much of a restriction in the exhaust will hinder MPG's.

Do you have hills around you that you take regularly? If you do, go up it floored and set the exhaust housing to a cool 1200*. That way you know you won't ever get it hot enough but still have a good compromise on spooling.
