i also hav some sort of disturbing noise

Postby ciamcoop » Sat Dec 10, 2011 6:41 am

Truck has 253k on it, pump cranked etc. The noise started when I was spanking a duramax, about 3000-3100 rpm and all of a sudden it started rattling. I shut it down and checked it all out, no bubbles in radiator, it blew a little oil out dipstick but not a lot, and it was missing. I cracked injector lines and found number 6 to be the hole with the problem. When I cracked injector line the engine didn't change sound. I'm hoping for the best so I pulled the injector, it wouldn't blow it put by cranking it so I made a puller and it came out. I took it apart and checked and cleaned all the parts. It looks like it has some wear on the plunger thing inside but I don't know. I put it together and put injector back in but didn't install the hold down nut, I cranked the engine and it blew the injector out with a lot of force so I'm thinking I still have good compression. I put everything together and fired it up. The misfire is gone but it still has the rattle/knock in it. It does have a little smoke at idle now. When I crack #6 injector line the rattle/knock goes away. I'm wondering what you guys think, I'm thinking maybe the injector isn't closing totally so it's dripping fuel? I ordered injectors but don't want to put em in and not be able to maybe return them. I'm nervous it's something serious and I'm 1300 miles from home. Sorry about the long post but let me hear your thoughts.

Guess I could've read down a few more posts, sounds about like mine. I haven't swapped injectors around yet but I think I'll try it.

Well I got my new 5x14s in but the knock is still there. I guess I'm probably looking at a broken piston, wrist pin or rod bearing. This is not really what I was looking forward to. Anyone know where the best place to start looking for rebuild kit is? On another note the engine is much quieter running now, aside from the knock.

Have you checked valve lash on it? I'd run the valves and see if it helps.

I'm at work in bfe Colorado on an oil rig right now and can't find anyone with feeler gauges, but I did roll the engine over and kinda check them by hand. They all seem ok, some feel a little looser than others but none seemed really loose. I get done working Wed morning and I'll get some feelers and check em.

Anyone else have any ideas? I read something about a thrust bearing somewhere that wears out and starts making noise, any details? I'm 1300 miles from home but I don't want to destroy the engine if it's something bad, but a tow bill to get it home would be more than the pickup is worth. I drove it about a mile after I put the new injectors in, the knock is quieter but still there unless I'm coasting then it's totally silent. Inside I'm thinking it's a broken piston, but what is the likelihood? 3000 rpm isn't anything to hurt these and the truck was all stock until I got it 25k miles ago. Egt has seen 1500 before but not for very long at all. What would you guys do? Btw I'm around Greeley, CO and am heading back to OR if it matters to anyone.

Not necessarily at idle. I haven't done this with a 5.9L, but a guy i work with ran his Oliver 1955 around the barn lot without a valve cover

To do a quick check of the thrust washers just grab the balancer and move the crank in and out. I thought mine was excessive doing that so I put an indicator on it, and it was right in the middle of the spec. If the thrust is bad the crank will move alot.
