Anyone make a aircooled crossover for 89 1st gen?

Postby M37 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:23 pm

Does anyone make a finned intake crossover for the early 1st gen trucks. I dont want to cut up the rad support at this time and would think a heat sink style fin arrangement on a crossover might help.

I dont think there would be that much need for it, seeing that the amount of area that the air is passig over is not really Ideal for passing heat.

i bet you would not see a difference

Well it should be a factor based on the exposed surface area to transfer the heat. So a x-over with fins would have more surface area then just a cast square tube. I am not an engineer so I can't figure out how it would compare to the air to air cooler in the grill (prob 5%or less), but I beleive it would have a positive effect and expell SOME heat.

For example, some manufactures just extended steel lines to cool hyd fluid for power steering, some are not even in a air stream.

Your underhood temps aren't exactly optimum for cooling purposes, let alone the fact that it's probably pretty stagnant in that area. The inside of the pipe would really need to be finned as well since the air is moving through it so fast. Liquid makes a lot better contact, and thus exchanges heat a lot better through just the surface of longer piping.

I could see if you were wanting to make this out of some scrap aluminum you had laying around or something, but it would hardly be worth paying for IMHO.

If you're still interested, Siliconeintakes.com used to have some aluminum tubing with fins on the outside of it. I haven't looked at it in a long time.

Tim put 1 of those on his truck and said it makes a noticable difference in EGT's. As for putting it in place of a crossover, it can't hurt any!

Those look like they would do the trick. They should make one to direct fit the early engines.

I think i recall that some of the older buses that had a 6bt in them came with something like you're describing. After cooler?? I think is what its called, im not sure if one would bolt up, but im sure a lil fab work and you could get one to fit. If the turbo is putting out 400ish degree heat and under hood temp ballpark 120ish??? (vehicle moving down the road/ fan blowing) im sure it would do something.....i might be way off in my temp estimates but cant hurt

Thanks for the info. I will have to check out the "storage" buses that are around, the only problem is the engines are worth so much $ that everything will prob be gone.

If you can find it, there is an WJAC option for these engines. Mostly ag/industrial apps. No need for the mods to install a CAC like the factory has done on later trucks. Need the cooler and different high pressure fuel lines to make it work, plus a way to hook up to the coolant.

Yea, I have a 4btA with the water jacket cooler, but I thought I would have to change to a P-pump and lines. Now that you say there is a VE pump line configureation I will look into it, thanks

He's correct, there is such a beast. I just put a set of the lines on my truck. I didnt get the heat exchanger, but it's the same one as the P-pump one so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Great, next week after the holiday, I will call around to the Cummins dealers and see if they have any good used ones.
