Blue smoke haze

Postby VanillaGorilla » Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:07 pm

So I got it running again, got the air out of the system and found out the FSS wire was bad. Pump is up about 1 turn, Denny T stage 2 pin and BD 40hp injectors. Gained some power but I am getting a light blue haze, I am thinking maybe it's because of the seafoam treatment I put in with this tank since I know the truck sat for a while before I got it and it's what a Cummins service employee recomended. Weird thing is no matter how I stand on it I get no black smoke at all. So do I need to adjust the pump more and see what happens? Assume the blue haze goes away after the fuel treatment has been run through? What now?

Still neeed some help here. Pump is cranked up quite a bit now and it runs strong but I still have a blue haze when I come to a stop or the engine is idling. Can I tune this is out or is this kind of common?

What washers do you have on the injectors? .020 would be ideal, they are really thin. Try adjusting the smoke screw so that it is flush inside the afc top. (ccw) As long as the starwheel isn't bottomed out, it should be fine. Or does it smoke when accelerating now that you turned it up more? If it does you could set the starwheel where you like it best. Smoke screw and washers are going to affect the idle haze, as well as the full power screw. IC trucks also haze more with the smaller piston bowls IMO.

What are the specs on those injectors? If they are re-worked PODS (which I *think* BD`s are) thats probably the main source of the haze, which is most likely caused by having too wide a spray angle (PODS are 155 deg). FWIW I went thru this with both the PODS I had in mine and again after I swapped the PODS for some 7x10`s. The 7x10`s have an even worse spray angle at 158 deg and I was getting a good bit of blue stinky haze which I was able to tune out of it by about 80-90% just by fiddling with the timing. Could also be an injector popping early or dribbly but unless they have a ton of miles on them I`d try messing with the timing 1st.
It`s not about how hard ya hit...it`s about how hard ya can GET hit and keep movin forward.

The washers are just commons replacements. I do get a light blue haze on acceleration. Thanks guys I'll try some more pump tuning this weekend. I did however slap a 24v with a cheap superchips chip LOL

When I got my 370's they came with the .040 washers. I looked at them, and knew they were thick so I measured them. I then went up to the parts counter at work and grabbed a set of the .020 washers and installed them. It only hazes when cold, none when it's warm.
So you need to measure them to see what you have. Just because they came with the new injectors doesn't mean they are the best washer.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks for the info, that may be the problem solver. Gona try some pump tuning first since that's easiest but if it doesn't work I'll try that. I seem to remember thinking the washers were kind of thick compared to what came out of it but I wasn't sure how much the copper would compress. Thanks man, btw still gotta put on the 16cm housing I got from you lol
