Banks parts question

Postby Mopardragster » Tue Mar 20, 2012 3:35 pm

I just bought my first Cummins. It is a 91 D350 Dually with auto trans. My question is about some of the stuff under the hood. It has a Banks intercooler, clots of aluminum piping, a Banks fresh air intake going to the turbo, an intake coming from the intercooler that says "Banks Intercooled"' a Banks exhaust brake, and a gauge pod on top of the dash with Banks gauges. So tell me if all this stuff makes it more powerful or something and about how much this would have cost back in the day. My brother has a 93 Dually and this 91 will run circles around it he says. Thanks in advance.

I bet you've got a Banks Power Pack. I know that they haven't been made in a long time! The Power Packs for the 2nd Gens have a exhaust housing and maybe a fuel plate too. I've heard of these, but never heard of someone actually having one on their truck. It's pretty unique

A non-IC'd 91 would usually run circles around an intercooled truck stock, they were just a little hotter engine. Since yours is intercooled I'd bet it runs even better than before.

Some fumbling with the fueling would make your truck really lay the spanking on him. ;)

I had one of those ICs. It's a very good unit for what it is. 8)

Banks likes to push their K&N rebadged air filters. They are CRAP! Pull plenty of dirt through. Replaced mine with a Wix 42790 (BHAF). Flows some air and still a paper element.

Banks kits are good for people who don't know any better, or don't know how to put the correct part combos together for more power. Just plenty of expensive. I almost bought a Power Pack for my '97 years ago, but built the engine up myself. Had 100 more hp than the Banks kit, and cost $1000 less. :D

Yeah, you got a good deal.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to lose that air filter though, they really are a rebadged K&N and K&N's really don't belong on a daily driven turbo vehicle. Depending on the piping and mounting, you may be able to throw a BHAF on right in the same spot. I've never seen one to know though.

Banks is good for safer power but you pay for the advertising and the research to make all of his components CARB and EPA compliant.

Power pack back in the day came with gauges, 14cm housing, intercooler, air inlet, and air filter iirc.
