Can you run an exhaust brake with an auto trans?

My '91 came with one and it has an auto trrans and several people have told me that you shouldn't run one with an auto trans. Fact or fiction?

I can't imagine it'll hurt anything, you just won't get the real effect of the retarding since the torque will just slip it out. Since it's spinning backwards of it's designed direction it'll probably be even slicker...


It may raise trans temps a bit from all the slipping.

I thought Pacbrake made them for the 3rd gen trucks, but I have not heard of anyone using one on a truck not equipped with lockup.

As stated, you can but it won't be as effictive due the non-lockup converter.

This truck apparently has a lot of mods done to it. How would I know if the converter had been changed to a lock up unit?

It would sound like it has 5 gears.

90% sure it is a non-lockup. A lock up mostly requires a whole different trans
