Intercooler........

Postby cstalnaker » Wed Apr 11, 2012 6:56 pm

Well fellas, I need an intercooler for my 92. I pulled the intercooler to replace some seals up front and noticed that it had two small holes in it. I was wondering what you all would recommend.

Thanks,

Craig

I tried to get it fixed but the radiator repair shop said they couldn't fix it. I have seen and heard of people using the PS intercoolers and 2nd gen. intercoolers, I may end up going with the PS intercooler and making my own piping. Dad actually just purchased a crew cab Ford with a Cummins and it had a Powerstroke intercooler. I kinda have a little bit of something to go off of there.

Still, if any of you have any better suggestions, proceed to suggest. haha

Powerstroke IC is the best option.

I planned on it. I heard the I/C's with the plastic side tanks aren't near as good as the aluminum I/C's. I'll have to get some 3in exhaust pipe too. Hopefully I can find one pretty quick, I hate not being able to drive my Cummins.

The Powerstroke one you want works from 1999 through 2003, WITHOUT CATALYTIC converter.
Go to Car-Part.com (Online Junkyard Parts Locator) and input Ford F-350 (Super Duty) 1999-up, Intercooler and search the whole USA.
They're ranging from $60 (some damage) clear up to $375.
Pay particular attention to ones in the arid climates, they'll be less likely to be weather damaged (rotten) and people in those areas also tend to run good filters (but not ALWAYS).

I found a bunch of them listed for $65 in Texas.

Hey guys, change in plans. Dad just called me a few minutes ago and said that the radiator repair shop was going to be building me an intercooler. I didn't want that done, but I guess that's what's going to happen. It's going to cost like 700 bucks. He's always the one to spend more money than necessary.

The radiator shop said that the I/C was full of holes and had practically rotted to pieces.

You do understand that this is potentially a "Bait and Switch" type of scam, right?
They tell you yours in worse shape than it is, then offer to "build a custom intercooler" for your truck, only to find out it probably won't fit and it'll probably need custom pieces.

In other words it will probably be something they ordered that's "close" to yours, but needs mods to fit right.

By all means tell your Dad not to let them do it.!!!

$700 is quite a chunk of change! I'd go with a 7.3L and Cooler Tubez for about half that.

Mark is the cat on those a Commiefornia only thing? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the cat/no cat thing on the ones I've seen. And for $65, yes please! I'd take the risk

I understand what you guys are saying. It's hard to change his mind, but I'll talk to him. If I can't change his mind then I'll update you all on how the one they 'make' fits and performs.

I doubt they were lying about the shape though. That thing was awful looking when I took it out of the truck, it had mud packed halfway up it and two very noticeable holes.
