belt tensioner

Postby studie91 » Tue Apr 17, 2012 6:31 pm

i just redid my belt, belt tensioner, water pump, and valve cover gaskets on my 91 d-350 non intercooled. when i fired it up and did my final check over i noticed that my belt tensioner was slightly moving around. i went and looked at my 93 cummins and the tensioner doesnt move. i doesnt move much just a little bit.

New tensioner?

Is the little pin sitting in the proper hole, and the bolt is tight?

If it's in the right hole, there is a possibility that they gave you the wrong one. They aren't all the same.

What do you mean "moving around"? The whole assembly shaking, the arm moving with the belt, arm moving towards the radiator and back, or what? The plate the tensioner bolts to could be loose, but I've never seen one yet.

Mine twitches a little bit too. It could be that there's an accessory with a bad bearing on the front end, causing the belt to drag momentarily. Could be the idler. Pull the belt off and give everything a spin to feel for resistance

I see that on equipment all the time, it's what it's supposed to do. There may be some crap stuck in a pulley which pushes the belt out a little and then it drops back in or it may just be an imperfection in the belt.
