89 12v, very smokey and low on power, any ideas ?

Postby skeen550 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 1:53 pm

I did a cummins swap last year and the truck has never been a power house dead stock but ran ok.

Its an 89, VE pump of course, stock non I/C injectors, HE351 cw with the wastgate operational, 3.5" DP, full 3.5" exhaust with no muffler or cat, K&N filter right off the turbo.

I just put the he351 on 2 weeks ago, before that the baby h1c with 18cm housing would hit 20psi max.

Pump was dead stock rebuild, nothing done to it with the old turbo on it.

I changed to the he351 CW and the truck was a DOG, would not even break 50 MPH in 5th, period.

Would not break 15PSI max and simply had no power, no smoke at all where previouslty it was a little smokey down low but cleared up on top.

So, I had to turn the pump up to get it to run, so I went two turns in on the power screw and flipped the AFC pin around backwards.

It WOKE up, wouldl hit 32 PSI no problem, very responsive and way faster boost than the old baby h1c.

But, it did SMOKE like a freight train...so, I pulled back on the power screw one turn and the smoke dropped a little but still more than I like, especially down low and it wont really clean up on top either, at least not until the stock governer start pulling fuel and of course boost drops.

Right now I get 25 PSI with the pump one turn in over stock and the stock AFC pin backwards, nothing else done to the pump.

I had the injectors checked about a year ago before I swapped the engine in and they were in spec per the shop, what that means I dont know but it was a year ago.

I suspect an injector is clogged or to far out of spec and is hurting power and adding smoke.

It will blue smoke under a load, as in pulling a 7k trailer, I dont notice it unloaded pushin blue but it hazes at idle at times as well.

I have the ZF5 trans running an adapter plate, 4.10 gears, the truck is a 95 4 door long bed, 4wd F350

Also fuel mileage has been sucking the past 3 months and seemingly worse with the HE351 and my recent pump mods.

I get maybe 12mpg unloaded and 10 or so with a 7k load.

I have a carter black fuel pump, last time I checked it had 10PSI and plenty of volume.

Thanks,

Scott

Kinda sounds like either a boost leak or the waste gate is hanging open.

Check all your intake connections first.

I agree with Tacobell here. Boost leak.

U might wanna check valve adjustments also. Not hard to do but could potentially make a big difference if u make them right.

If it's not a boost leak, Hansen01 had a problem that sounds similar with his he351 too. It ended up being a wastegate issue.

Thanks for all the replies.

I did find a few boost leaks and am working thru them now.

The wastegate I have wired shut and it didnt make a difference, basically I can control the boost with fuel adding or removal, but I do have it wastgated right now and it will peak at 28-32 PSI, what the wastegate is designed to regulate too, so I hear.

I will check back after fixing the leaks I found and go from there.

Scott,
What's the HISTORY on your turbo?
Was it on a good running engine prior to your acquisition, or was it off an engine that needed rebuilt?

The HE351s and their variants (HE341 or HY35) have a really tight tolerance on the turbine housing.
Commonrails LOVE to burn up pistons and rings and send the shrapnel through the turbine, which destroys the turbine's inducer.
For this reason, the 1st thing I do is split the turbine housing from the cartridge to see if the turbine is hacked.

Below is a pic of a turbine from a turbo where the engine "just" lost the rings:

I think that's missing the edges of the wheels a little bit!

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Yeah, mine is in the same shape, I went ahead and ran it anyway for now and plan on getting a new turbine later.

The boost leaks fixed the max boost as now its back up to 32psi with no more fuel than before.

But, it still smokes more than I like so I will be pulling back on the fuel screw another half turn and see.

It almost clears up at full boost / rpm to a light haze now, but is still too smokey at low rpm, it really smokes between gear changes the most.

If your turbine looks like that, there is no way it's nearly as efficient as it can be.
Go on Ebay, type in "HE351CW" in the search, pay the @ $130 they want for a turbine and grab an HX35 rebuild kit and fix your problem.

Mark.
