difference between pumps?

Postby 1990CTD » Wed Nov 28, 2012 5:43 am

My 90 model non I/c pump was leaking from 4 spots. So I found a rebuilt one off a 93. It has 3200 gov spring and turned up. I told the guy what I was gonna put it on and he never said anything about a difference. He is a well known diesel machanic around here. The guy putting it on for me hasn't said hes had any trouble yet besides the timing gear where the keyway slips on to is stripped. But not sure how it happened because it ran fine before the take apart besides fuel leaks. But any info is helpful. I got the pump for $450.

The main difference between pumps is the way the KSB works. Use your old KSB on the new pump and you are good to go.

Whats the ksb? I'm pretty new to diesels. I've had a 02 24 valve before and dumptrucks. But this is my first first Gen.

It's your cold start advance. Non-ic pumps don't need it on cold start up, and then get 12v, while ic pumps get 12v on cold start, and then off after. Basically one works opposite of the other. Ic ksb's can be turned on with a switch to advance the timing when you want some extra power, but they can burn up if left on all the time. Maybe one of the pump guru's can chime in and help out too...

the delivery valve holders are longer on the non-ic pumps. may have to bend the lines a little for them to work, or just swap DV's. i have my ksb (intercooled pump) on a switch. i have left it turned on over night by accident, and have drove several hours with it powered and have not had any problems. thats not saying that you wont either.

Ok. Do you have to change it? Where is it on the pump? How hard to change?
