Rotating mass of the 5.9?

Postby Begle1 » Tue Oct 23, 2007 10:27 pm

Anybody know what the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons weigh on any old stock 5.9?

That sounds way too much... I thought it was 150-200 for the crank, then 30 each for the connecting rods?

Actually I think the crank less flywheel is more like 110-120lb. A piston with rings, pin, and snap rings is about 5lb and the rod is about 5 too.

A connecting rod is only 5 pounds?

Damn, they sure look more substantial than that on pictures...

I threw one on the scale before I posted that its actually more like 4.7lbs for a rod but it didn't have a bearing in it so I figure 5 be close enough. On your shipping you probably paid for packaging too.

Wonder how a 5.9 would react to knife edging and lightening the rotating assembly and using a Fluid Damper to keep the crank from cracking. I know it would be a little harder to get the dude out of the hole without killing the engine because of the loss of spinning mass, but I bet it would wrap much faster....

Yea, align honing the mains wouldn't hurt either. I wonder how the stock oil pump holds up under 5k revs?? Enough volume?
