Adding intercooler to 89 turbo

Postby mattme » Fri Oct 26, 2007 11:31 am

To make a long story short, I am putting a 6bt from an 89 w250 into a 89 Ford F350 and adding a 3rd gen intercooler. I am wondering how people are piping the stock turbo (non-intercooled) to run an intercooler?

Are most just geting an adapter (guessing 2" to 3") to go from the turbo outlet and a 90 elbow and adapting that to fit the stock intercooler piping? Or should I be upgrading my compressor housing to later style to use the stock elbow?

This truck is mainly going to used for towing a 14k gooseneck and 5th wheel camper.

Thanks

Change your compressor.I used an hx35 with a 16cm ex housing, you could use your stock ex housing prob a 18cm.

You'll need an elbow for the compressor housing. They can be had off ebay for around $10. Then just pipe in accordingly.

Like was said above, Upgrading your compressor would be benificial. The hx35 would be the cheapest upgrade for your application. [url]http://htturbo.com/cu.htm This would be another improvment for your application if you chose a hx35 since it's a tow vehicle.

They wont bolt up to a stock nonintercooled turbo. NI have 2" outlet, intercooled have 2.5".

If you dont want to upgrade to an hx35 (though it is a GOOD mod) you can get a intercooled h1c housing to put on it.

Thanks for the options.

Where is a good place to look for the hx35 and are there ones to stay away from? I looked in the for sale section and didn't see any in there.

Money is kinda tight since I have a ton into swapping this motor so the cheaper options are better for now. I do plan on doing some slight mods to here but basically want a dependable good fuel milage truck. I would like to add injectors and a smaller hot side to get the torque lower for towing.

Also would a stage III kit be a good option for the turbo or skip it and look for a hx35.

The hx35 would probably be the best investment for you as far as cost goes. EBAY!!! There's always some on there. I would use your existing exhaust housing cause a smaller one will probably run too hot. What is the truck it's going in?

I'd get a 2ndGen turbo outlet elbow (I have a spare) and at least an IC H1C impellar wheel and housing (got spares of them, too), and hook it to the 3" tubing on the 3rdGen cooler.

89 F350 Crew cab 4x4 Dually. Running 89 5.9 with gen III intercooler, nv 4500, divorced np205, 265/70R19.5

I also have a 95 front clip that I will be swapping out to for the looks and there is more room for mounting an intercooler up front.
