Advice Needed

Postby 01hillbillycummins » Thu Mar 14, 2013 10:23 am

Alright, so a while back my headgasket blew on my engine. I decided i would do a full rebuild while i was at it. When i took it apart, I found a couple bent pushrods. The rods all looked pretty good, no bronzing from the oil. The bearings looked pretty dang good as well, only slight amounts of copper showing through on a couple of them. The cylinders still had small amounts of cross-hatching.

The rebuild is including these parts-
Brand new head with 60lb valve springs and o-rings.
DDP stg 2 injectors
Coated pistons
Full rebuild kit-bearings, bushings, wrist pins, gaskets etc...
Push rods
ARP head studs
Goerend Converter

I will be honing the cylinders, and cleaning the block up with fine grit sandpaper. Everything is being painted as well.

Everything else, like the cam, crank, and IP will remain how they were. My question is, how does a recipe like this sound? Anything i should add in there? Keeping in mind that my budget is very limited at this point.

Thanks guys.

coolant bypass for the cyl head. there is a thread on it someone here. id put a 3800 rpm gov spring in. what pistons are you gonna put in it, marine or the small bowl intercooler pistons? i would also put a new stock or aftermarket exhaust manifold on. it would suck to spend all that money on a head to have a shrunk up manifold break an ear off.

As was pointed out elsewhere, you'd be smart to go ahead and do a full (correct) inspection/overhaul of the rod and main journals. Repair/renew as needed. Be sure to check the connecting rod's big-ends for being out-of-round. Repair/renew as needed. Mic the cylinders from top to bottom so as to assess the taper, etc. Repair/renew as needed. Money best spent the first time. ;)

Just because the crosshatch pattern is still there, that shouldn't be viewed as a measure of little wear. It'd be a damned shame to install new pistons only to see excessive blow-by first thing.

Why did the push-rods bend? Is the camshaft still true? It's lobes did have to push hard enough to bend the rods. Got any valve footprints in the associated pistons?

i can do a different GSK spring later, i just need to get it running for now. They are the large bowl pistons, but with the rings a little bit lower on the piston. Basically a non-IC piston but with lower rings. If i had the money for a new exhaust manifold i would, but if this one works i'm running it.

Will do, i'll make sure to check the cylinder walls. The push rods were bent because i had stuck valves. I haven't got the cam or the crank out yet to inspect them, but all the pistons looked fine. Just a lot of carbon buildup. All the rods looked great, i got the slightest impression that somebody had been in this engine before, because with the amount of miles my engine has, i was expecting a LOT worse.

Thank you guys for your help, i really appreciate it.
