Fuel pump? Maybe?

Postby Higbean » Thu May 23, 2013 8:40 pm

I recently rebuilt my ve pump myself. Went pretty smooth and the truck has been running great until today. I was merging onto the freeway and floored it when it sounded like the motor died. I let my foot out of it and after 5-10 seconds it kicked back in and away I went. Prior to the pump rebuild I put on the fuel pump that came with this motor trying to eliminate any doubt about the fueling issues I'd been having. Anything else I should look into?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it, my bet is a clogged filter or something of the like........when you give it fuel it's running out of fuel

What RC said, or a momentary bad connection to the FSS, a bad FSS, or a wiring glitch.
If it went straight dead, like you just shut the key off, interuption in the FSS is most likely, but if it acted great, then sluggish, then dead and then came back, I'd say fuel supply.

See if you can get it to repeat it.

Mark.

I had the same problem but different it was my fuel pump. I would check like they said the FSS. Also check for the wire and make sure it's not hiting anything. That could be it have you seen or smelled and burned plastic? That would be the wire hiting the motor and melting. To the best of my knolage the FSS would do that. I know cause I use it as a safety lock for my truck so it won't start and drive off with some thief.

Hey after rereading it dude sounds like a pump. Did the motor die down then as you took your foot off did the motor idols and or sound build back up. If so its your pump its haveing a hard time rebuilding pressure then.

Maybe, maybe not. Just found out yesterday I've been driving around my 91 with a DOA lift pump. Found out when I changed my fuel filter, no prime from the pump period. Had to pressurize the tank to prime it. Note to self. Don't pressurize a full tank. Runs fine without it. Now I have a little more motivation to install the low pressure piston pump I've had on the shelf for a year.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.

Did you make sure the rod wasn't on the cab lobe (they can't prime then).

Yep, hand turned the engine through twice looking for that sweet spot. Checked it off the engine too, toast.

Finally got this one figured out. Darn FSS was the culprit. I had gutted it but decided I'd run it until it failed when I rebuilt the ip. Well apparently the plunger will suck down in there when you romp on it. So out she goes and I'm back to pulling on a cable. Thanks again for all the help fellas.
