Intake manifold ?'s

Postby 93 W350 LE » Thu May 30, 2013 6:54 pm

What do you guys run? How much of an improvement are aftermarket? Could a guy fab his own? Why does the stock look so restrictve and crappy?
Thanks.

Coolertubz.net , he is a great guy with awesome customer service.

if you are more comfortable with stock take off styles...... the 98-02 24 valve is the best.

Are the 98-02's a direct bolt ob swap?
Thanks.

The side that bolts to the intake heater is, but the side that attaches to the intercooler piping is at a different angle.

CoolTubz's also can supply the pipe to go from the IC to a 24 valve air horn.

Do not use a intake horn off of a common rail engine. It is not the same as a 2nd gen intake horn.

Here is a pic of your intake horn beside a 2nd gen intake horn. Want to guess which one is the 1st gen.

This is a pic of his IC pipe for the 24 valve air horn.

This is a pic of a common rail intake horn. Look at the restriction just inside of the air horn where it changes direction. The common rail horn isn't much better than the 1st gen air horn.

Guessing the other is a Coolertubz? Looks like a flange on a mandrel bent tube, nice. I',m guessing not matching the port doesn't cause enough turbulance to have any ill effect on the flow.
Thanks.

The mismatch doesn't affect anything. I have ran a set of cool tubz's and the 24 valve air horn. Both horns dynoed the same. The only thing I noticed was right at the peak toque rating for our engines. The engine felt more responsive to throttle inputs for some reason with the cool tubz's. Its was real noticable when towing.

Good to know. So the same on paper, but seat of the pants difference. What kind of power gains?
Thanks.

No power gains shown on dyno. Torque reading showed the same on both runs with each setup.

I dyno'd with the 24 valve air horn. The truck was shut down and left straped on the dyno. Swaped in the cool tubz's and redyno'd.

The noted difference was in the 1500 to 1700 RPM range. With my 3:07's it was a noticable difference between the cool tubz's and the 24 valve air horn. A friend of mine drives my truck every once in a while. About 2 weeks after the dyno runs he borrowed the truck to tow while his truck was down. He noticed the difference also. I hadn't mentioned the difference to him after the swap/ dyno runs.

A week or so later we threw the cool tubz's on his truck. I didn't get them back till he sold the truck last Dec. The dyno runs were 3 years ago.

You're going to notice cooler egts..........and a more responsive throttle.

Dyno gains.........minimal to none.

You might see a mpg............

The biggest thing is you'll notice a better driving truck.

I have 3" tubes and a 24 valve air horn and soon to be 2nd gen intercooler....... now with as much fuel and air as I am and will be running I kind of need it more than a lower hp truck.........however, I originally put them on my truck when it was near stock and it made a better driving truck.

Good to know. So it really just helps optimize the mildly tweaked set up, with potential for more.
