Blue smoke ?

Postby Black93 » Sat Jun 01, 2013 4:27 pm

I was driving down the interstate today and noticed that I started blowing blue smoke. It would smoke when I let off of it, then I pulled in to a gas station and it was doing it at idle and got worse as you rev it. All of my gauges are normal, oil is full and looks clean. I pulled the charge pipe and downpipe and they are clean also. It's never done this before, any suggestions?

I need this fixed, it's my only ride.

I really hope it's nothing internal (can't afford that right now). I thought I read somewhere that an injector can cause blue smoke, I hope that's my problem. My brother followed me home and he said it didn't smoke under constant throttle, but when you let off or stop it would start doing it.

It started raining on me tonight, so I will check blowby tomorrow.

If it was an injector the idle would be lumpy

It could be a worn turbo oil seal.

Every time I've EVER had blue smoke it was due to poor combustion (cold outside, wrong spray angle injector, too much timing, etc....)

I started it this morning and now it's running like absolute chit, very rough idle and won't rev. It still has the blue smoke and now a bad raw fuel smell out of the exhaust. I'm gonna drain the oil today and check it.

I went to an auction yesterday morning and ended up buying an old tractor and on my way back home to get my trailer is when it started.

The only thing that I've done to the engine so far this year was put the stock fuel pin back in about 2 weeks ago.

Is there any oil dripping out of the breather tube? Any abnormal crankcase pressure? If yes, then I'd guess that you cracked or burned a piston or cracked a piston ring which has now acted as a cutting tool inside of the cylinder. Get a diesel compression tester. Start with number 6 cylinder and work your way forward to save time.

My vote goes for an injector...............

I took the lines off the injectors today and all of them were dry, no fuel ran out of any of them. I then primed the lp and got fuel out of the middle two lines.

You'll only get fuel out of 1 or 2 lines at any given time without turning the motor over and then doing it again.

Yeah, I guess I should've finished my thought by saying that I don't think the pump is my problem. I drained the oil yesterday, no metal on the plug magnet and none in the oil.

I made a fancy schmancy :D injector puller tonight and only had time to pull #5 & 6 injectors before it got dark, other than a little carbon they looked fine. I'll pull the rest tomorrow and check them.

How common is it to have the hold down nut seize to the injector?

well, it's not uncommon...........

Remind me never to ask you the riddle of life.....

To answer the question with a reasonable rebuttal ( ;) ) on my truck, cylinder 5 and 6 were kinda stuck in the nut. Rust fuzed the injector body and nut together, sprayed them with a little PB blaster and worked them back and forth and it eventually broke free. No biggie.

With both sets I've cycled thru it I've yet to have an issue again
