Water pump blues

Postby D-dog357 » Sat Jun 15, 2013 7:40 am

Never even thought about this kind of fun !!

So yesterday I was helping my son install a lift kit on his jeep and just as we were pulling in to the drive way after chasing parts. We heard this boom, kinda like a rad hose letting go and felt a thud. As green blood flowed down the street I was thinking what the heck? I just put new hoses on it last month - dang it !!!!

Pop the the hood and SUPRISE !!!!!!!!!! A bolt on the water pump had snapped in half, the bolt ear behind the fan pulley had also snapped off and the water pump had been launched it to the fan    WTF ???? So there we are with both of our rigs now in pieces and it's only 106* out side fun - fun - fun !

Anybody ever seen that before ??

I have seen on my uncles dodge(non-diesel 318), the water pump locked up and brok the whole front off shaft and all, but bolts still in tact.

That is a strange one! Is the pump set up or turn freely?

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Toombs, the pump was working normal and seemed to be fairly new (from PO) as there was no wear on the pulley from the belt at all. I put new hoses and belts on a month ago when I killed the pin. Pump spun free and easy and installed a new seal at that time too. Even after it blew out it still was in great shape - kinda.
