Fuel Pump/Lift Pump???

Postby hassy21 » Wed Nov 21, 2007 1:56 pm

I have a 90' Dodge Cummins and I also race IMCA dirt modifieds with a 350 chevy in it. I was wondering where the fuel pump was located? If it is located on the side of the block in the back(closest to the tranny than it might be leaking. I dont think the IP is leaking because where that pump is it has fuel on the side of the block. I was also wondering what the pump runs off of? I thought it might be like the gassers runnin off the cam.

Yes, it sits back there above the starter and yes it runs off of the cam.

Where can you get a gasket or replacement lift pump? If I can I would like to upgrade but if it doesnt matter much I dont need to. What sort of upgrade would I get and where could I get it?

Here is the list if you would like to upgrade to the "sexy" piston lift pump available through Cummins, all of these parts are required for the install.

Low pressure piston lift pump. 14-18psi at idle, 15-18psi cruise speed. 11psi WOT with modified VE pump. part #'s needed for upgrade:

1- 3936320 lift pump.
1- 3914753 'tube'- fuel line.
1- 3914284 spacer.
2- 3931348 gaskets.
2- 3918191 seals

replace the first number 3 with a J and go to a case dealer and save $$$. I had about $40 in everything but the pump.

If you're after an upgrade to support mild injectors and plan on going with the piston pump, skip the typical piston lift-pump from Cummins that we normally go for and go straight to a 2nd gen piston pump.

In addition to providing a higher output pressure, the 2nd gen pump also sports a much larger piston that provides a much higher volume

2nd gen on the left compared to that we would install otherwise ~

Outwardly, the two appear the same. The difference in piston bore is made up by a bushing (That we normally get on the left) ~

NOTE; the 2nd gen version puts out a pressure that would threaten the VE's internal seals, therefore, a bypass style FP regulator is required and is best applied between the fuel filter and IP. Set it to maintain 15psig with the engine free-revving to 2500rpm.

Hope this helps. ;)

BC, why go with a bigger pump if he said he doesn't need it? And the added expense of a regulator? I have a low pressure pump and 370's, and it feeds them just fine. Lowest I've seen is 7 psi at WOT. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I was thinking of that "Slippery Slope" and how most of us at one time or another said "I don't plan of Bombing my CTD".
