Valve adjustment

Postby brandonmgreer » Tue Apr 22, 2014 8:31 am

What is the interval on adjusting the valves on these engines? Mine is running just the tiniest bit rough, and I'm thinking the valves may have never been adjusted in 300k miles... just a thought

Every 50k? IIRC... either way, if you've never done it... get 'er done.

.010 intake, .020 exhaust.... I run mine at 8 and 18 though.

When you do set them and you use the timing pin, mark the harmonic balancer to to block somewhere that way the next time you don't have to worry about using the timing pin to find tdc. Its kind of a pain to bar the engine over and and push the pin in.

I've always just gone off from number 6. When the valves are at cross over, you are a tdc.

Sorry for the delayed response, and thank y'all for the input and suggestions.

Are there any benefits to running them at .8 & .18 over .10 & .20?

Will the valve cover gaskets seal back up or do I need to have new ones on hand when I do it?

If the valve covers are fresh, you can re use them... if it has been a while, they'll most likely need replaced.

The advantage of the 8 and 18 are a little more air, in and out. Is it noticeable? Figure it can't hurt and many cam guys have said it wasn't a bad idea.
