Bolt torques

Postby mattme » Fri Nov 30, 2007 10:31 am

So, I guess I overlooked an important part of installing my motor. A Cummins manual or the diesel supllement.

So with the truck I bought it came with a manual and I hadn't thought to look at it untill replacing the front and real seals and the oil pan gaskets and guess what, it doesn't have the torques for the bolts. :x I fell like a fool. I guess I should have ordered the Cummins manual like I thought I should mistake #1.

Anyways, could someone please tell me:

Rear main seal bolt torque
Oil pan bolt torque
Front timing cover bolt torque
Timing housing to block torque

PToombs told me I should double check the torque of the bolts that hold the housing to the motor since I am going to be in there. ;)

Thanks guys and my manual will be on order.

Oh this is an 1989 5.9

Off the top of my head I would've said 18ftlbs for all of them, but wasn't 100% sure on the rear main seal housing. Aren't they 10mm bolts? That would require 18ftlbs. The link said 48inlbs. I could be wrong not looking at the book though.

All references were taken from the 1994 Cummins service manual.
Source: Component specifications and torque values, page V-26
Rear seal cover mounting 48 in/lb

I have just rechecked the manual and I am also the author of that thread.

Could the Cummins service manual be incorrect?
