Found this in the oil pan...

Postby Michael Yankovitch » Wed Aug 06, 2014 5:48 pm

Currently I'm restoring the engine (see signature). When I removed the oil pan and cleaned it out I found the following in there:

Looks like 3 brass pieces, 2 black plastic half moon shaped pieces with very fine grooving on the inside (thread?), a chunk of white plastic, chunk of black plastic and some bits of metal swarf. Any ideas where these pieces came from?

Thanks!

The black plastic look like a valve stem seal.

The other items I have no idea.

After extensive google searching I am starting to suspect the turbo crashed at one time on the previous owner. Other people on forums have asked about brass in the oil pan and some said it could have been from a turbo failing and the aftermath falling down the oil return to the pan.

I searched for images of that and it looks like your right. Damn. That's kinda scary... How in the hell could that end up in the oil pan without making the engine run like crap? I drove this truck around for a day prior to teardown to listen for any odd noises or vibrations and it sounded very smooth. I was actually impressed at how quiet it was for a 1st gen...

The oil returns threw the head a large. Those would just move with the oil flow with out problems. When it came out threw the valve spring there might have been used a slight miss for one or two rev's then back to normal.

I used to find them In the oil pans all the time on gassers. Small block Fords were real bad on then. They used a large screen on the oil pump pickup. When it sucked a piece of valve stem seal in. It would twist the hex rod used to drive the distributor in half.

I did many R&R's for that problem. Remove the engine. Pull the heads for valve seals and valve job. Remove the oil pan for trash removal. Replace the distributor drive rod. Count the money and send them home.

Been there, done that. When I pulled the engine oil-pan to install a nipple for the primary of the twins, I found stuff like this:

Sure enough, it was the remnants of the engine's original turbo's bearings (as seen through the turbo's oil drain port):

Thanks for the helpful pics. Now I can check those components now that I have an idea where they came from. I will let you know as I will be rebuilding the turbo and head soon.

Hi again, just an update:

I bought a valve spring clamp and took the #1 CYL intake valve spring off. Interested to find out that the parts I found in the oil pan match the worn/damaged valve seal shown in the PB pictures. So most likely I am missing another of those small seal pieces with the fine grooves in them.

I'm still not sure where that small piece of white plastic came from...almost looks like a part from a zip tie strap. I'll let y'all know if I find out.
