exh. manifold bolts ?

Postby jethro » Mon Sep 08, 2014 10:20 pm

Putting on a new exh. manifold this week end. The old bolts holding it into the block were pretty rusty and stickey-
(happy there wasn't much torque) They all came out pretty hard considering the low torque they should have been at.....

I have seen antique cars and aircraft use brass hardware on the exhaust to prevent breaking things down the road when it has to come apart again...

Also I wondered if stainless would work OK ? Not sure if I could even find metric brass bolts......

Any Opinions ? / experience ?

Go to studs. It makes it one million times easier to install. If you can get them stainless all the better. I got mine through genos garage
Ducati- professional nap taker, and thread derailer extraordinaire
Brownie: 80 dodge heavy half. Ghost cummins under the hood, and some sinister plans
The Roo Hunter: 93 w250, lifted, 2 whistle machines, and a bunch of other go fast goodies, uhh..... not there yet
Jaeger: 12 ram 3500. Lifted, exhausted, and fed an excessive quantity of air
The Huntress: 02 Jetta TDI. No muffler, egr, horsepower

I never have a problem with them. I also think you're missing the point that I have that stuff off about once a year for something or other, putting on twins, swapping turbos, or just because I don't have enough other Shit to do in my life so I frig this up somehow.

I was fantasizing about being able to find brass bolts in metric- put them in with a graphite/molly anti-seize
and then drill the bolt heads for safety wire so they cant loosen or back out. I guess I can do the same with stainless....

If I remember correctly - back when I drove a CJ-5 with the in-line 6 cylinder- it loved to eat intake gaskets.
it would pull them in two from the manifold expanding/contracting. I later found out that there is some kind of
"magic" goop made from molly and graphite that you put in there that allows the gasket to slide WITH the manifold
instead of going stationary on the block from friction. Apparently it did not break down from the heat involved. If I can
find out what that stuff was- that might be good on/in the bolt threads.

You might have better luck finding brass studs and nuts. Or regular studs and brass nuts would be better than stock stuff.
