Resealing a VE Pump?

Postby jmos4 » Fri Sep 26, 2014 5:30 pm

Hi,

I have a 89 and the injection pump leaks, I have done carbs in the past is this something a novice (to Diesels) can tackle?

I got a Bosch seal kit and the few tools to remove the pump is there anything else I should I will need besides patience?

Also was planning on installing a 4200 spring while I was in there is there any other mods I should do while in there if I chose to tackle this?

The engine is destine to go into a 92 4x4 stick (nv4500) with 4.10 gears and 38's and when I am done just want a reliable truck not real interested in making lots of smoke as get enough unwanted attention with it being lifted. I do haul a car trailer every now and then so still want decent mileage and to use it as a everyday driver.

Regards,
Jim

I would install a 3200 spring....no need for a 4200 unit. Rotate the fuel pin to the deep side and get it running. Then maybe give the fuel screw a 1/2 turn at a time and see how you like the performance.

As for the reseal job...well it's a fairly intimidating unit for the first timer, I know I was. Just take tons of measurements and photos. I took pics of ever piece I removed and how it went together etc. Probably took over 100 pics...and I can say I referred to them more then once on the re-assembly.

There are lots of threads out there on re-sealing these IP. Do a google search and a bunch will come up.

Use petroleum jelly to hold some of the difficult pieces in place, like the springs and what not. I usually put the pump in a soft jawed vise, input down. Makes disassembly easier. Just take your time, and make sure the input and rotor assembly are lined up properly, and you shouldn't have an issue.
