H1C HP Limit

Postby dbshelton » Thu Oct 02, 2014 4:13 am

What is the limit of a H1C turbo before EGT starts getting too high? I guess this would also depend on exact tuning?

If you have a manual, just some pump tuning, healthy rebuilt stock injectors, a healthy lift pump.

Same as what oldestof11 said.... except it'll depend on how healthy that auto is... and you'll most likely need a converter.

I'm back on this again. Trying to decide what to do about a turbo. Current turbo is H1C with 21cm housing that is in fine shape. Swapping a 1991.5 12v into a 13,700# loaded shuttle bus. Hungry diesel fuel pin, 3200 rpm gov. spring, 60# valve springs, Ford 6.0 Van intercooler, Ford 5R110 auto trans and 3.73 rear gears. A $1000-1500 new turbo is not in the budget. I have a good HE351ve, but not sure if I have enough room for it under the van engine cover. Is there a cheap way to control this turbo?
Its been suggested I go with an HE351cw. Is modifying the stock turbo a good option? Now is probably the best time to change since I have to build all the plumbing anyway.

You'd be better off with an he351cw or 351ve, over the h1c.

I've never played around with a 351ve, therefore have no help in controlling it. There are some threads on the internet and a few members here that have though.

For the cheapest electonic option for the 351ve i think is the banshee ii, $750.

Looks like the cheapest option would be a HE351CW. Guess Maybe I'll look for one of those. What kind of HP level will that support?

Found an HE351CW. It will be here some time next week. What all do I need to change from the H1C besides the downpipe and the IC piping? Are the oil lines and mounting flange the same?

You will use the female-male oil line adapter on the H1C as the HE351CW has a male-male adapter. Just swap and install.

The drain and drain bolts are the same.

Mounting the turbo to the manifold is nearly the same. I left the bottom 2 studs from the H1C on the manifold. I drilled out the top 2 holes on the manifold and ran a bolt through the manifold into the turbo. You can see it here. I think it is a M12x1.0 but don't quote me. The manifold is around 3/4" thick so you do NOT want to have a shoulder on the bolt longer than that.

Oil lines and mounting flange are the same, you need a turbo to manifold gasket for an 04.5-07 5.9 though (undivided). You may have to use the top oil adapter from your h1c, i cannot recall anymore.

You dont need a complete downpipe but it will do the trick. You can just buy the flange and weld it onto your exisiting downpipe.

http://dieselautopower.com/he351-clamp-he351cl/

If you have the stock solenoid, use it or else plug the hole with this:

http://dieselautopower.com/he351-soleno ... -tsche351/

Here is some pics of my install, i clocked the housing so the oil lines are vertical. This makes the factory wastegate unusable, i tacked the gate shut. Makes 40psi with pump turned up on stock inj. A spring gate is recommended though.

You will also need to drill out two threads on the turbo housing when you remove the two studs, you will understand when you try to install the turbo to the mani. I also had to back out two studs so they are a little longer for full thread engagement of the nuts vs getting longer studs.

Thanks for the help. I will get the turbo clocked, mounted, and the oil lines on. Then I can take care of the piping after I do the engine swap. I hope the turbo fits on the bus exhaust manifold.
