fuel pump fit ?

Postby jethro » Wed Oct 22, 2014 8:09 pm

I ordered a 2-nd gen fuel pump for my 93 12 valve. Got around to taking the old diaphram one off and looking at how the
2-nd gen piston pump would fit. First thing I see is that the flange/base of the new pump is sloped at about a 30 degree angle
.......... if I turn it so that the plunger seems to be on the cam- the outlet is hitting the plastic thing which covers the valve pushrod side plate cover. if I turn it 180 degrees so the outlet points down instead of up- it looks like the plunger is now where near the cam ...... is there a wedge shaped spacer that need to go in between ? Seems like I must be missing something here somewhere...... can somebody clue me in ? ( I will deal with changing the spring out once I understand the fit-up)

Is the cam just really highly eccentric and I am seeing it from the 90 degrees from TDC ? ( so it appears off center)

I think I figured it out- another web site-
Looks like you heat up the plastic cover with a heat gun and carve it out as needed to make space for the outlet fitting and outlet line.

does that sound consistent with yalls understanding of it ?

Yes, you have to carve off some of the plastic noise insulation in order to clear the new line from pump to filter housing. I just used a sharp utility blade, but I suppose a heat gun would work, just as long as one didn't melt anything

Thanks RC- that's the same page I found.................
I guess I will make a 3/16 aluminum spacer to go between the pump base and block.

That spacer is only $15-ish from Cummins..... IMO easier than making one.
