injector change ?

Postby jethro » Sat Oct 25, 2014 7:59 pm

I want to make my engine get the best gas mileage possible.
It is all stock 160 hp as far as I know. I was reading a magazine today that mentioned (in their opinion)
that the stock injectors wernt the best choice for MPG optimization. They recommended an aftermarket injector-
and I think the said they were doing 250-300 HP and that the MPG increased.......... (?)

I know injectors are fairly expensive- and I would not want to go over 200-250 without going to ARP studs (is that correct?)

Are there injectors which would add only a little HP (no stud change) and maximize MPG ?

You don't say what year your truck is, it makes a difference. For intercooled trucks I've heard that a set of 190's is a good mild upgrade. They are smaller than stock but atomize better resulting in better mpg and horsepower.

Injectors in themselves rarely can change fuel economy. However, it is VERY common for folks to notice an increase in economy due to their stock ones being worn out or needing at least a re pop.

It will be in a 2004 f-350 (6 speed ZF-6 4WD) and the engine is a 93- all stock as far as I know. It was said to have 50K miles. I havnt seen anything so far to disbelieve that. We wouldn't expect the injectors to be eroded much that soon would we ?

PT- can you give me some more specifics on who makes those injectors and what exact model ?

what is "re-pop" ?

Your 93 motor has small bowl pistons. Make sure you get 145 degree spray angle injectors. I bought a set of 4 hole 190 injectors years ago that were about a 4x12 155 angle. Worked fine in the n/ic motors, hazed pretty bad in the intercooled motors. There are different 190's out there, just make sure the seller can tell you exactly what they are. At least the number of holes and the spray angle. No need for studs at 250 rwhp. Re popping means reshimming the internal spring so the injectors all pop at the same pressure. They eventually lose tension. Some injector builders re use old springs because they are broken in already.

Jethro, guy at PDR diesel told me that a few years ago. He said their injectors have more smaller holes. Website, www.pdrdiesel.com

Pete you must mean for non-ic trucks as the IC trucks have 6hole nozzles and I am sure no version of 190's has more, most 190's are 5hole. Non-IC trucks are 4 hole though so it would be true that 190s have smaller but more holes.

Out of the 3 different injectors that I personally know of that were used in 190 hp ve applications.... 2 are a 4 hole, while 1 is a 5 hole design. The 5 hole is a VCO, and I don't now of a single company that sells them. All of the "190" injectors sold are a 4 hole SAC design. They are about the same size (flow wise) as a stock intercooled nozzle.

All 190s are a marine angle injectors. Though, of course, due to their design and in a mild timed truck.... they are incredibly responsive. They have a tendency to haze cold (obviously), but are usually fairly clean when warmed up.....assuming timing is correct, etc....

All in all, they are not the best injector, but do in fact work and have a good feel to them. I've personally tested them and have found them (to date) to be the most responsive, light throttle torque injector I've used. But of course, power was really no more than a stock I/c injector and they hazed when cold.

Mark at PDR told me that several years ago. Maybe my facts about holes are off, it has been quite a while. I do know he said they were smaller and made more power because they atomize better, which made for better mpg.
