New Crancase Vent

Postby mhuppertz » Sat Dec 08, 2007 9:45 pm

Because my bypass filter has a return in the filler tube my K&N filter trick was spitting oil all over my engine, I decided to vent it from a valve cover instead, but I didn't want to go in the top because I want to keep the rattle plate on for looks, so I cut down an AN12 fitting to give rocker support clearence and put the vent out the side of valve cover one, then ran it to a vent tank so that I can trap the oil and reuse it. I still have to mount the vent tank on the firewall....

So far, so good. I will jamb on it going to work in the morning and see if I get any noticable spray, but my feeling is it will stay clean.

What'd I Miss?

I musta missed something. What was the part about the bypass return and K&N trick? I guess I'm not understanding why you did this in the 1st place...

The K&N would have worked fine on the oil filler tube on a normal truck. On my truck I have the bypass filter return plumbed into the filler tube so I could check the status of the filter. With oil going into that tube comes out through the K&N when there is a bunch of blowby coming out of that tube.
That's why I bagged that idea in favor of plumbing into the side of a valve cover and then into a catch can with a breather on the top, which is working perfectly so far. I like the fact that I can retain the rattle plate over the valve covers, and I like the vibe of the tube and catch can with a vent.

K&N?

Postby Ace » Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:17 pm

I still don't get what a K&N was doing on the filler tube. What sort of K&N we talkin' 'bout here?

The factory vent is too small for high boost levels. I think mine is partially clogged also. I was thinking about ways to vent my engine and stumbled on the K&N idea, found a K&N breather that fit on the tube at a local speed shop. The part number is: K-N62 1480 1 1/3" clamp on filter, about 18 bucks. It works great!

So how much boost are you making? I'm not sure how that affects blowby, unless yuo are experienceing excessive leakage past the rings. Have you down a leakdown test?

Blowby is linear to boost. Ever seen the vent on the big tractors at full boost? I am at 35PSI.

Mark, I don't have any trouble with excessive blowby. I am 'gated at 40 psi.

I'll bet you have a honda car's worth of exhaust coming out of your vent pipe that 40PSI though. The only reason I am having trouble is my vent is clogged, so I get to see what is coming out of the crank case.

I'm not trying to be argumentative at all, and my engine does have 340K plus of (sometimes hard) use, but if you ever get the chance look at your vent pipe next time you have the truck on the dyno. I'll bet it surprises you.

Scheid Diesel sells a billet tappet cover with either 1 or more weld bungs or they could've been just drilled and tapped, 3/4 pipe or maybe smaller bungs for additional crankcase venting/tubes. That said I wonder how much oil at low boost would come out of one without any mesh or the like in the cover/outlet like the oem vent is... If not much, next time I had the injection pump off, I would remove the tappet cover and drill some holes then weld a pipe fitting or the like, then add another vent tube.

I would say the extra venting isn't really necessary til about 50+psi of boost. I have a 24 valve breather and oil fill combo at the timing cover where our oil fill tube screws in. The breather/oil fill combo is about $47  from Cummins.

Another way to add venting is get the stock Dodge 24 valve breather (many sold on ebay) that doesn't have an oil fill, use a valve cover with oil fill, or remove the breather each time you change/add oil.
