Complete Rebuild Finished = Engine Vibration

Postby wilkyflex » Thu Dec 25, 2014 7:56 pm

Hey guys,
I just finished rebuilding my 1992 5.9 cummins and just put it in the truck today. Runs good, but there seems to be some engine vibration that did not exist before.

My vibration damper looked in good shape when I put it back on. Can it go on any way, or must it go on a particular way. The shop manual indicated that it did not matter how it went on.

Should I adjust the timing?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Dean

had mine off for KDP- asked myself the same question....
Didn't know so I put a punch mark on wheel rim and on shaft so I would get same orientation...
It looked completely symmetrical to me though .....

It doesn't matter how it goes on.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

what else can cause engine vibration?
It's not missing on a cylinder.

It seems to me that the only thing that could cause engine vibration are pistons and crankshaft.
If the pistons are not the same weight, then it could be the cause. Or if something wasn't right about the crank, then it could be the cause.

Any other ideas?

Solution! I put the old motor mounts back in, and everything is smooth. The new motor mounts were just too stiff and the normal engine vibration was transfered to the body.

Were the new ones OEM replacement mounts, or polyurethane?
