Fuel Filter

Postby Diesel » Wed Jan 07, 2015 12:50 pm

Just to be clear - our fuel filters require the seal installed on the threaded stud before tightening, correct? My Baldwins did not come with a seal so I used the one from the filter I pulled. Right now I have a leak from the filter area and I don't know if its the heater, the seal above the heater (replaced already), of if the Baldwin doesn't require a seal on the stud.

I can't remember exactly, but it may not need it. We use Baldwins at work, and some of them the center of the filter is higher than the Fleetguards and you need a thinner gasket or none at all. If the center is higher the old inner gasket may be too thick and hold the filter from sealing on the outer one.
Pull it off and see if there is a large step from the outer gasket to the inner surface or not.

Thanks Pete. I'm starting to think that it never needed one and that is why its leaking. It also starts like crap now...like its getting air...didn't do that before...when it gets warm in the next couple days I'll pull that center seal off and cross my fingers.

I don't believe my Baldwin had a gasket that went on the threads. I believe it has a big oring seal around the outside diameter it seals with. Its been too long since I changed it to remember.

I pulled the extra center gasket I had on there...still leaking...I got the stock filter nipple/heater reasonably tight but maybe its still loose because its leaking. I gave up on the heater and just got the delete nipple. Hopefully I don't lose starting ability in the cold.

I never had trouble starting mine without the fuel heater. Northern Indiana here.

Cool, good to know. Uncle Geno should have the new fuel filter nipple here today. This will be the 4th time I've spun that fuel filter off!
