cleaning injectors ?

Postby jethro » Wed Jan 14, 2015 4:08 pm

has anyone tried to clean injectors cosmetically with an ultrasonic cleaner ?

just wondered if it was worth getting a cheap one to accomplish that.......

Meh, toothbrush and wd-40 work good. Chase it with a little brake cleen. I like putting dirty injectors in a glass with about 1/4" gas, let them sit a couple days, tips clean up easier.

I would sandblast them :) Just kidding haha... I wire wheeled mine and scrubbed them with scotchbrite. Had mine looking better than new. Thought I was all good until I had them "pop" tested. All the nozzles were worn out, some wouldn't hold pressure. So long story short, get them pop tested.

Here's my before and after. BTW I thoroughly detest photobucket. There's gotta be a better way.

The external part of the injector, being dirty.... has nothing to do with how it performs. It is the internal stuff that matters (opening pressures, pintle wear, etc...)

But to clean them up... Soak them in gas for a few days.

Yea I wasn't very clear with that. Cleaning the exterior is just for looks.

If you have a high mileage (300,000km) engine then I would bet your injectors will fail the pop test. I cleaned mine in near laboratory conditions using soft scotchbrite, clean dry air, and a magnifying glass for inspection. I got them spic and span on the inside and out. I brought them to be tested and.....fail. I would just bring them to an injector shop and have them install and test new nozzles. The "pintle" and nozzle body are a matched pair so when you order nozzles they come with the pintle.

Mine were around $30/nozzle + labour.
