pulling the engine for a reseal

Postby fatty » Tue Jan 20, 2015 9:29 pm

I'm going to be pulling my engine out to reseal it next week. I'm adding a quart every 2-3 weeks anymore it leaks so bad. Anyways, I'm going to do a cam when it's out and fix the freeze plug(s) so they won't come out on me.

Anything else I should be doing or replacing while I have easy access to the whole engine?

Check torque of timing case bolts, kdp, check if cam gear walking, maybe jump a tooth...are you pulling the head? Edit: I see you are changing the cam anyway.

Leaving the timing where it is because I want to see what difference the cam makes. I will only pull the head if I need to for a bigger gasket to make the cam fit.

So I found what appear to be two piston squirters in the pan. How did they get there? And do I need to put them back? The engine ran fine, all the pistons and walls look good still.

Also is the oil pump worth replacing or do they last forever?

It depends on the miles on the oil pump. I'd replace both mains, tappet cover, and timing case gasket. As for the squirters it would depend on the miles as well as to what I would do.

238,xxx on the engine. I don't think it's ever been out before so same on pump. I'm planning on replacing all gaskets and seals.

I would replace the squirters. They were there from factory might as well put them back.

I also would replace them, they are in there for a reason. If you end up towing or creating a lot of heat they could be the difference between a cooked piston or not. You are going to be real close anyways, might as well do it.

Do the head gasket while its out. Most of us see head gasket problems at the 250k mile mark.

I'd pull the caps and check the bearings, you're already there and its easy. When the pan is off make sure the gasket surface is flat and not wavy around the bolt holes from someone over tightening it. I've seen the pan issue on a few and seen them split the gasket around each bolt.

Its going back together with orings and studs so should be good to go.

On the bearing thing, can I reuse the old ones if I remember to put them back exactly the same?

Well I ended up doing all new main and rod bearings and replaced the squirters with some billet aluminum that I found on eBay. I was going to reuse my bearings but I knocked the thrust apart and couldn't get it to stay together so I just replaced them all.
Got the new cam in with new tappets, and put the timing cover, fan, and balancer on before I realized I forgot to put a cam retainer on.

How did the stock bearing look? I'm glad I'm not the only one who forgets sthi after getting things halfway together.

They looked almost brand new. I would have reused the but I figured I should replace them all if I was doing one.
Thing is I've been taking my time and making sure every thing is just so. Just slipped my mind.
