A runaway kind of situation...

Postby meby » Fri Jan 30, 2015 2:27 pm

I had a runaway engine yesterday. I got the air shut off before major death and destruction, but i'm pretty sure I floated some valves. When I crank it over it sounds normal, but as soon as it fires it makes an awful racket.

Where is a good source for head gaskets, valves and such? Should I replace or reuse head bolts? And is the removal and replacement procedure the same as the 2nd gen trucks? (I own a factory shop manual for a 2nd gen)

Thanks,
-Matt

Mumau diesel has great prices on Cummins parts. I would reuse the stocks bolts if you're not going too wild with the engine.

Matt, check the pushrods 1st before you get too excited, maybe it only bent some. And the 2nd gen manual should be close enough to pull the head if necessary.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Make sure you check the stock bolts (check the length) if you do end up pulling the head.

To see if they are stretched? What length should they be?

Not sure, but I know when I checked my original ones way back in the day... IIRC only 3 or 4 were within spec.

A top end kit should come with a stretch gauge. If the bolts are within spec they're good to be reused.

When I got a headgasket kit from Mumua, it had a stretch gauge in it. All of mine came back within specs with a 1/4" to spare.

Did you ever get a line on a ranger, and genset like you were talking about at SOP?

If I've still got it around sop I could bring a little diesel genset for you. It'd need to be gone through, but I wouldn't ask anything for it
