Gear driven air compressor. Anyone running one?

Postby 762frmafr » Tue Feb 10, 2015 9:46 am

Thinking about onboard air. Anyone running a Bendix style gear driven air compressor that comes off of the Medium Duty trucks and buses? From what I can tell, the power steering pump mounts to them. Would there be anything else that would need to be done? Like a vacuum pump?

Mine is going into a ford- but I would think you need a little vacc for your heater and air cond. control doors- and possibly for brakes if you have vacc boost.
Supposidly my ZF-6 trans has a power take off that an air compressor (or whatever) can be run off of- havnt thought to look for it under there yet- not sure how big it is-
Can you use an air pollution pump or do you need more pressure ?

Would like to be able to run air tools and fill tires as well as run an air horn or 2. So 150-175 psi is what i am thinking.

I thought Tacoclaw found a similar setup and wanted to run it on his truck, but said no way no how, it was too long and interfered with the drivers side motor mount. Cruise on over to his build thread, should be the last few pages as he hasn't been around much lately

Here is a link to a build on Pirate, I believe the first page of the build shows the clearance on the compressor to the pump. ( not my build, I'm just a fan.)

You can use the AC compressor as a OBA compressor
