Need a cooling fan- help

Postby Higbean » Thu Mar 12, 2015 9:10 am

Guys, my cooling fan got into my radiator and I need to find one. Apparently I can't just order one. Is there an aftermarket one that will work or do I need to source a used one? Thanks.

Is your truck IC or Non-IC?

You can run a 2nd Gen fan on your IC truck with no issue...I have this on my 93 motor. You can also run it on a Non-IC motor, but you will have to ditch the fan shroud.....again I had this on an 89 motor.

there used to be a product called a "flexfan"
It was a multiblade aftermarket fan blade. It had more blades and they were wider. The trick was that the blades were
some kind of plastic that was flexible. I think the blades flexed at higher engine speeds to have less pitch- but flow more
air at idle where you might be sitting in traffic and more prone to overheat.
don't know if it is still made ........

maybe someone will know......

The fans on the cummins motor are pretty much diesel specific. The way they bolt to the clutch fan assembly, the off set, and the width of the overall fan make them pretty much a specific piece.

I tried tgo make a gasser fan "work", but as I stated above there was too many specific parameters that had to be met to make it work properly. To my knowledge there are no aftermarket type replacement fans available for the 1s Gen's.

As I mentioned the 2nd Gen 12V and maybe the 24V fans will work.

Unfortunately they are getting harder to find as well. The OEM 1st Gen units are pretty much unavailable...NOS or used. And the NOS 2nd Gen units are getting scarce now as well. I think I paid about $150 or so for my NOS one about 4 years...guess supply and demand has driven the price up.

I'd put a want ad on your local craigslist, and on as many on-line cummins diesel forums as you can. There has to be a few people parting out a 2nd Gen truck.
