CAT Fuel Filter

Postby 762frmafr » Sat May 02, 2015 11:35 am

I just ordered a Piston Lift Pump kit from THD. I am running a Beans Diesel sump and -6 braided fuel lines to the lift pump. I want to protect my new lift pump as much as I can. Does anyone see a problem installing a CAT 2 micron fuel filter BEFORE the lift pump? If so what could go wrong?

Before I did my 4wd conversion on my crewcab I was running a cheapy fram clear fuel filter "before" my piston lift pump. Would keep a spare in the glove box just in case. You would be surprised at how much that little cheapy filter would pick up out of the tank.

I have not re-installed it since doing the conversion....got to get out and get that done. Thanks for the reminder....;)

I wouldnt....they do better pushing through than sucking through. I would just install a cheap see through plastic one.

I wouldn't run anything finer than 35 micron pre lift pump.

A 2 micron is too fine. I am running a 10 micron Racor element type before mine and it does fine. I thought of changing to a 30 micron. but decided to stay with what I had. I don't know how fine one of those see thru ones are, but they don't have much surface area to begin with, and may impede flow. Most cummins in industrial applications use an inline FF5079, which is actually a fine screen, I don't know what the rating is on that, but it works good.

What is the part number on your 10 Micron? Or even a 30 micron with 1-14 threads?

It will be fine, just expect a 2-3 psi pressure drop.

I too vote for the clear gasser Fram inline filter before the lift pump. Unless you can remove the mesh screen at the inlet of the piston lift pump, (and then it's up to your spin on filter between lift pump and injection pump) you need something there. You never know when you can get bad fuel or someone put toilet paper in your tank or the like, that mesh screen will clog up and you'll lose power to the point where you can run out of fuel (suck air). Then have to bleed the injection lines. BTDT.

762, I know big spin-on filters hanging off the frame look cool, but unless you're running an electric pump, the clear inline filters work best with the piston pump.

That is the filter I decided to go with. It will be before the lift pump. It is mounted to the frame rail up out of the way. Cannot even see it from the outside of the truck unless you are on your back. I have no interest in looking cool. I want sthi to last and not be replacing it every couple of months. I have access to "free" fuel which is sometimes of questionable quality. I know the old adage rings true. Nothing is free in this world. But if a $40 filter housing and $10 filters make it so I can run my "free" fuel, then so be it. A $10 filter is cheaper than a $189 lift pump or being stranded on the road. So everything is mounted, I am about to plumb the filter in anticipation for the lift pump to arrive tomorrow. I will update this thread to let everyone know how it works.

I agree! It will be better than nothing for sure! My buddy has these on his truck fuel tanks and they work ok. I won't trust the screen on the inlet of the pump any more. I had nothing between the tank and the pump and drove from here to Indiana, and was watching the fuel pressure drop all the way. I was getting pretty nervous by the time I got there. I pulled the inlet fitting and the screen was mostly plugged and the piston was scratched. I cleaned the screen but still never got back to the 16 or 17 psi I had when it was new.

Exactly my thoughts. The filter was cheap and readily available locally. I will update this post with progress. But I am thinking it will be great.

Well the above posted filter has been installed in my truck since yesterday morning. I am running a stock diaphragm lift pump while the piston pump is in transit. I am at 6psi of fuel pressure and at WOT it flutters down to 3psi. Seems to be working just fine. The below pic is of it installed on my truck. I feel it will suit my needs just fine.
