Oil consumption

How much is too much? This winter when I did my oil change, I used the 10w30 Rotella instead of the 15w40. I figured since it was cold I would use a little thinner oil. It has been approximately 4000 miles since the oil change and I had to add 1 gallon of oil. I see no leaks to speak of. There is no blowby to speak of. The only thing I can think of is, the type of oil I used or maybe valve guide seals. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Get any blue/white smoke? Bad valve seals will suck up some oil.

It smokes on acceleration but i just attribute that to it being a diesel.
