Electrolysis (external)

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Wed Jul 01, 2015 8:34 pm

Anyone ever see an engine bay have electrolysis issues? I've never had anything like that on the RC, til it sat.

Everything aluminum has corroded severely, the injection lines, or any brass fitting has the white powder from corrosion......and everything steel has rusted badly.

Any ideas?

Have that issue here in Michigan as well. If it sets, it rusts, especially when it gets cool at night, and warms up fast, like late spring/early summer. Seems the more humid it is, worse off it is.
Gets even worse inside say a building, like a pole barn. I've found leaving the windows open, or a door and a fan blowing helps keep the moisture from settling, helps balance the temps.

Another, messier idea that has worked for us on trucks with extended sit times (read junk/or project trucks) is to power wash them, then coat every surface with a mixture of bar oil, diesel and atf. It sticks well, and repels rain pretty good. But it sucks to work on them later, without cleaning everything off again

So you've even seen aluminum corrode from sitting?

I called it "electrolysis" as it looks identical to what happens in boat outdrives, especially around salt water.

I don't guess I've payed it much attention.....but come to think about it,I've ordered some engines in from "up north" and seen some stuff like that on them. Of course the oil pans are usually rusted to hell on the ones with metal pans but the aluminum is usually white with a powdery residue on them.

I'd probably just wash every thing down during disassembly and clear anything that I didn't want painted a color.

Yes. In my welding truck, I've got a bin filler with pipe fitting, those little compression donuts for compression fittings, bushing, etc. All brass. When I bought the truck, everything was new like it had just been filled. Wasn't 6months here and there tarnished, with a blueish white powder, especially on the threads

Interesting. Been long enough since I was in Michigan (moved when I was 8) I guess I only remember the rust itself.

I do know that this last winter things were odd enough temperatures (for us) that I do remember actual condensation.
