Piston cooling jets

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Wed Sep 02, 2015 9:33 pm

Today I pulled the oil pan to change the gasket and found a piston cooling nozzle in the pan. No telling how long it's been that way, I've never had the pan out in the almost 10 years I've had the truck.

Should I just leave it alone seal it up and drive it and start saving up for a rebuild?

Ok, I cleaned some more residual oil out of the pan today and found a couple small chrome flakes and a couple sharp metal fragments.

Got to thinking, maybe those are reminents from when the IP gear came loose :?: and 2 of the 3 chrome flakes turned out to be oil bottle seal material.

I really don't like the idea of leaving it missing. The question I have is why did it fall out? Is the piston perhaps moving some way it shouldn't? I did some work on a 5 cyl Benz 300TD engine and after drinking a wee bit too much water it bent a rod and sheared off a cooling nozzle.
cheers,

That's the big question, I can't figure it out. Looking up at the inside of the engine, I can't see any obvious problems. In fact, the engine almost looks new inside, gotta love diesels
Once I get my other truck going I will probably pull this engine and inspect it on the stand and install some billet piston nozzles and new bearings ect. Until then I guess I'll just be super cautious with the EGT's since I have it put back together already.
