need pump guru

Postby rwd350 » Sat Sep 05, 2015 8:12 pm

So my 600k pump bit the dust...found a Cummins reman that came off running truck supposedly.. Installed pump and runs rough ...as soon as you open throttle I mean even .030 it dies... I am a tech for a living and have installed 100s of these pumps... Now I am human and screw up but before I pull front cover I would like opinions.

I haven't built many pumps so am having issues visualizing what is happening.
Thanks guys

Here is a bit more Iinfo... Truck had to be started wide open and there for last few months I had to keep hoping idle to stay running . last few thousand had to use sniff of carb leaner to light her off. So I figured head and rotor is worn. But I noticed old pump would barely squirt fuel with lines cracked. This new pump fuel shoots everywhere with a vengeance . both say phase 3 on them.is there internal differences I.n Timing? New pump was on garbage truck and didnt have idle up solenoid. Had block off plate.

Question of hour is....should I put newer head on old body? I wanted to order a head and plunger anyways but only found Chinese stuff. All help is appreciated.

Not a pump guru, but I'm pretty sure these pumps never came with an idle up solenoid. Cuuld you post a pic of this block off plate and the pump itself? I've heard of the throttle being indexed backwards when installing gov spring, making the throttle work backwards. Give it throttle and it dies. Maybe thats whats wrong with yours? Also post any numbers you can find stamped on the pump.

Idle up solenoid is what alot of people call it. It's the cold start advance. Garbage truck didn't have it. Yes I will post pics as soon as I figure out how. Lol

Could be timing. Have you tried advancing it more to see if that helps?
