90 non-intercooled. Looking for advice

Postby bradshaw106 » Sat Oct 03, 2015 10:38 am

I have a 1990 non-intercooled sitting on my engine stand getting ready for a engine swap. Just curiuose what you guys would recommend doing to the engine while it's out? Currently it's getting..
Front/ rear main seals
Oil pan and gasket(original is rusty)
Water pump
Lift pump
Thermostat
Hx35/12
366 spring
Fuel pin
And of course paint

Any thoughts of things I should do while access is good?
Engine being used as a daily driver/ milage vehical. Would like to see 300-350rwp someday

Has the dowel pin been tabbed or checked if its moved? Easier to do now than in the truck. While your doing then in, might as well retorque the gear case bolts, those are known to vibrate loose. Depending on mileage of engine, oil cooler wouldn't be a bad idea, seems there an item around 350-400k miles. There fairly cheap too. Check your flexplate if your running an auto, there prone to cracking around the bolt holes.

With a stick and a 366, esp since youre planning more power later, 60lb valve springs wouldnt hurt. Doing it now is much easier than leaning over a fender later

Do you think I should mess with the timing? I wasn't planning on it?.

Timing gear case bolts. Everytime I've read about doing the KDP, they mention to check the timing gear case bolts.

Personally, if it is already on a stand, do the full upper and lower gasket sets. Did that on my crew motor, minus the headgasket and gasket between timing case and block.

Don't know if the motor's still on stand or not, but I'd advance the pump gear a tooth, and retard the IP all the way away from the cyl head.
