How loud is straight pipe sound from in cab

Postby spencerdiesel » Fri Nov 06, 2015 5:40 pm

I love nothing better than hearing the baaaaaaaawww of a straight piped 12v, but how loud is it from inside (not WOT), just driving around? I'm toying with the idea of straight piping the stock exhaust, but I'm afraid I won't be able to hold a conversation inside or hear my boss on my cell.........what is ya'lls opinion on straight through mufflers? Anyone have youtube vids of the exhausts? Everyone welcome, thanks.

I had a std cab 4x4 auto I stacked right behind the passenger side of the cab. 3" all the way to roughly an inch above the cab, with a flapper. Windows up, wasn't bad, hold a good conversation, radio didn't need to be loud, etc.
Windows down, or slider open, it was loud, especially for the passenger. Long trips required ear plugs, otherwise you were deaf afterwards.
Got real bad when I split the downpipe right by the trans, about a foot long :D

Awesome!! Does keeping the stock 3" downpipe let it "wrap out" at higher rpm? I've heard some stock 3" straight pipe that sounded (I thought) better than most 4". Got any vids of that beast?

No videos.
I kept the 3" downpipe cause I didn't want to spend the money for a nice exhaust on a beat plow rig.
Hell when the pipe split by the trans, I took 3 soup cans, cut them length wise and hose clamped them on. Was gonna fix it when it warmed up, but trans went later that season, and I parted it out.
Supposedly the 3" straight pipe is more annoying and louder than the 4", but having not dine a side by side, cant confirm.

Nothing wrong there, that's using some resource. I think I may go with a straight through muffler, been thinkin and neighbors may not fall in love with a 12 valve alarm at 6 every morning:)

I have never had a muffler on my 93 and it is not very loud in the cab, though I do have a 20' ramp on the back to quiet it down...

My pile has a full 4" exhaust, no muffler. At highway speeds, all I hear is the engine. It's only "loud" if I hammer on it when there is something that the exhaust can echo off of something. I've also ran the stock 3" without a muffler, and it's not much of a difference. You'll be just fine without a muffler.

My extra cab long bed is Straight Piped. It's kinda raspy but I wouldn't call it loud by any means.
A conversation with the windows down is not a problem.

Ordering food at a drive thru, problem.

Kinda hard to gauge in this video but, straight-pipe thru a temporary stack. The GroPro is just inside the rear window . . .

Thanks BC, already watched every vid you've got  I know engine rattle/noise increases with so much timing, but does exhaust noise do the same?

1320Fastback, is yours stock 3" or 4"?

I honestly don't know yet. I've had the truck for a week, driven it twice and just bought a house so am kinda preoccupied with other things.

I'll get out there this weekend and measure it.

I straight piped my standard cab D350 and it was only slightly louder, the muffler doesn't do a whole lot. Can't really tell from the cab because of overall engine noise and wind noise. My 01 on the other hand is a straight piped 3 inch and has alot more bark to it vs a comparable 4 inch system and alot louder and more rattly than my 12v's steady rumble. Must be all the extra valves lol
