At what point are piston lift pumps/stock lines inadequate?

Postby Bookshelf » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:17 am

At what power level do piston lift pumps become inadequate? I'm talking about either the first gen style or the second gen ones you need to use a regulator with. Also, used in conjunction w/ a piston pump, when are the stock size lines a liability? I'm going to upgrade the turbo/injectors on one of my trucks this coming year, but don't want to get too greedy and have to end up doing a fuel system. Thanks-Nick

I'm really not the right one, to answer that(as I'm still kinda stock) ,.......but here i go any ways

I thing once you have installed a piston lift pump, especially a 2nt gen with a regulator back to the tank, and your fuel system is starting to hold you back, that's when your weakest link or restriction is the filter.......Then better lines, bigger and better pump(s) .............................................

The 24V eng has a much bigger fuel filter system, and the new 6.7 is even bigger then that.

I thing that when your stock turbo can not be upgraded enough to keep it cool ..............It time to look, a lot closer to you fuel system

I made 443rwhp with the low pressure piston pump 3936320 and stock fuel lines. My 91.5 has the same LP and 1/2"ID fuel pickup and supply and IMO that will be plenty for 400-500hp.

Look at my sig. Piston pump with stock lines except for a remote mount 10micron filter with 3/8 lines from pump to filter, then to the inlet on the VE.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a set of POD's and a HTT 62/12 I was going to try out, it seems w/ the stock filter/lines and the low pressure piston lift pump I'll be good to go then. I'll probably at least temp a test guage in there and monitor full throttle fuel pressure when I get it together anyway.

The smallest tubing is the white plastic pickup inside the tank.
I think it's 7/32"?

Man that's small, I thought the feed line was at least 5/16?

Considering that the injector holes are so much smaller than the lines, and considering that the VE runs lots lower pressure and volume than the P-pumps (P-pumps can top 1cc/ stroke), I wouldnt think the VE injector lines would be much of a liability to 5-600hp. Beyond that, I'm not sure. Heck, I'm not even sure about how close my thoughts are to actual reality.

ANother thing to consider is that if you go too big with the lines, you may run into issues with streetability, or dirving at less than full throttle.

you are correct the larger lines screw with part throttle driveablitly but does make for a killer soundin idle
