VE pump AFC diaphragm

Postby Michael Yankovitch » Mon Nov 30, 2015 6:26 pm

I am currently re-sealing a VE pump on my non-IC first gen and encountered a strange issue:
I bought a AFC diaphragm from a Bosch dealer. When I got my AFC apart I noticed the diaphragm is different from the one the Bosch dealer gave me. Any ideas why? I don't want to put it in until I am 100% sure it will work the same as the old one as I am trying to keep things as original and stock as possible. I tried google...no luck

The one on the left is the one as found in the pump and the one on the right is the new one provided by the Bosch dealer.

Are they the same diameter, because of the angle of the pictures, it's hard to tell. That being said, if they are the same size, then you'll be fine. The new one is in a "relaxed" state, and the old one has been set in its place for a long time, causing the shape to change.

Is the old one torn or something?

Yes, They're the same diameter. The old one isn't torn, I was just replacing it because the Bosch shop recommended it.

Up to you, but if it's not torn, I'd run it. I've resealed many pumps, and have yet to run into one that is torn or needed replacing.

One thing I have noticed recently about some pump shops is that they'll throw away the "bb's" that seal the AFC lever pin and install those dang replacement caps. The bb's seal just fine 99% of the time, and are easy to remove and install. Those damn caps are a pain in the butt to get out at first.

Yea, I'll just throw the BBs back in and put a dab of epoxy on them like the manufacturer did originally. I was wondering what those caps were for in the DGK-121 rebuild kit... now I know...

I thread the holes and put in set screws with sealer on them. Been ok so far.
