Shoot no! Parts are readily available! E-Bay, Zbag, and a bunch of other places.

I may run 15w40, but what are opinions on lighter gear oils for the getrag? GL4 or 5?

Iirc your suppose to run 5W-30 engine oil, I imagine anything thicker will cause excessive wear.
I run Valvoline synthetic in mine, but notice slower shifts when cold, mainly first driving for the day, you have to shift and wait a sec before trying to shift into gear, otherwise it seems to "scratch" on its way into gear

Yea I agree on the 5w30 part. I have one of the 92 service manuals and it does call for 5w30. But I think the issue is the thousands of variables; unlike a 4500 we don't have a set in concrete lube. The carbon fiber (I believe) synchros in the NV can't take anything other than syntorq 75w90. The rag has normal synchros, so I guess you "could" throw anything in there, like 0w15 if you lived in Russia. Or 90w if you tow heavy in the Sahara.

Did I just ramble about a bunch of nothin?

3.5 is stock fill, and the experienced add 1 quart for 4.5. ;)

Yep, 3.0 came out of mine when I changed it

While on topic, in the past week Ive heard some noises that I aint supposed to be hearing......I start the truck in the evening and let idle in neutral for a min or so. Then after I start down the road (theres a mild hill I go down about 1/4 mile from where I start) I put her in 5th at idle. Under no load of course, as I'm going down a hill. Soon after the clutch engages, theres the most horrible metel-metal screeching you've ever heard. It lasts for a half second and then I never hear it again for the whole hour home.

If only 3 quarts came out of it, I would suspect the trans is cooked inside. Or it may be something in the clutch. It makes the noise when you let the clutch out, or after it's out?

Right after I let it out fully. This is only at idle speed, and only that one point in time during the ride home.

Though I do engage the clutch dead nuts in between the "braking torque" area as far as acceleration/deceleration. Idle is 800, so I let it out at 800 in 5th.

I couldn't quite get 4 quarts into mine today. I might try adding some stuff at some point to more easily get more fluid in though. Came up with an idea to make it as mess free as possible
