92 w250 missing white smoke.. help..

Postby cmauz61 » Wed Dec 30, 2015 11:14 pm

hey guys. 92 250 5 speed manual. one day i go outside and have no power... i instantly think, oo clogged filter or i need a new lift pump (used to make 34 lbs boost. pump is maxed. 4200 rpm and fuel pin)....

*pump was rebuild a year ago and leaks nothing..
*the truck starts great and throws a black cloud like it should at start
*anything off idle under light, moderate, or heavy excel the truck sputters and goes to pure white (losing all power instantly)...
*If the truck is not in gear and i try to rev it up hard its slightly black at the start and then pure white and backfires..
*wont make more than 5 pounds now and that is if I am in 5th gear at 30.... cant go faster than 35... loose all power and it decels if i try to drive light medium or hard.....
*I checked the valves and they are all close to tolerances and seem ok.

*I have chaged 2 filters, 2 lift pumps, and even ran a beans diesel sump kit fromt the tank (half inch line) to the new lift pump....

all of these changes have done nothing.... every once in awhile it will power up to 20 psi and then cut hard and blow pure white for miles....
it should be getting the fuel...

I am completely stumped..... is my pump F#@(ed or is this something random. like a switch that i dunno about.

any help would be appreciated1!!!!! about to take it to a shop if i cant figure this out

Sounds to me like it's sucking air from somewhere. My pile did the same thing, found that since I bypass the fuel strainer in the winter and reinstalled the strainer that the hose wouldn't seal correctly on the new strainer. Cut a chunk off to get rid of the formed hose from the barb that was in there and all was well. What lift pump are you running by chance?

the only hose that isnt new is from mechanical lift pump to injectors.

I'd pull your injectors and get them tested. Also make sure your timing hasn't slipped somehow.

A blown HG can cause white smoke and loss of power. May not be the case since you have issues at low rpm/no boost/low cyl pressures. Check oil and coolant.

How much timing advance do you have and is it the OEM HG?

oem headgasket (to my knowledge)

coolant is clean with no oil in it and oil level is unchanged.

the timing is advanced some but not by much.. (it has been the same for 2 or more years now)

Making sure the 4 nuts holding the IP in place are tight is the easiest way.

The fact that it acts up mostly when engine is loaded makes me think weeping HG, as cylinder pressures are very (relatively speaking) low at idle/no load.

They are tight. Yeah sounds like HG.

Just curious, what size exh housing you got, and how close to the head is your IP?

Exh housing stock. with 4 inch downpipe. The pump is only pushed like a half inch towards the head. It still has tons of space.

A half inch towards the head from stock is a decent bit of advance, not sure how many degrees that equates to though
